Every month a Johor Bahru business owner asks us the same thing: “Should I run Google Ads or Facebook ads?” Sometimes they have tried one, spent a few thousand ringgit and got nothing but a bill. This guide explains what each platform is good at, what a realistic budget looks like in RM, how WhatsApp fits in and what you should expect from someone who manages the ads for you.
Short version: Google catches people who are already looking for you; Meta introduces you to people who are not looking yet. Most JB businesses need one of them first and the other later.
What Google Ads Does Well
Google Ads shows your advert when someone types a search. “Aircond service Skudai.” “Dental implant JB price.” “Renovation contractor Johor Bahru.” These are people with a problem and a credit card, today.
Google Ads works best when:
- People already search for what you sell. Services, repairs, clinics, workshops, tuition, B2B suppliers.
- The enquiry is worth a reasonable amount. If one customer is worth RM 500 or more to you, paying RM 20 to RM 80 for a click that may become one is sensible.
- You can answer quickly. Searchers compare three or four businesses; the first to reply on WhatsApp usually wins.
It works less well for new products nobody searches for, and for very low-value purchases where the click costs more than the margin.
Google also runs ads on Maps, which matters for walk-in businesses. A café in Mount Austin or a clinic in Permas Jaya can appear at the top of the map when someone nearby searches.
What Meta Ads Does Well
Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram) shows your advert to people based on who they are and what they are interested in, while they scroll. Nobody is searching; you are interrupting, politely.
Meta works best when:
- Your product is visual and easy to want. Food, cakes, fashion, home décor, events, cosmetic treatments, property launches.
- You want to reach a specific area. Meta can show adverts to people within a few kilometres of Taman Molek, or to Singaporeans who visit JB.
- You want conversations, not clicks. Click-to-WhatsApp ads open a chat with your business directly from the advert, and for F&B and retail in JB that is often the whole funnel.
- You are launching something new that nobody is searching for yet.
It works less well for urgent, high-intent services, because the person scrolling at 11pm with a blocked drain is on Google, not Instagram.
Which One First?
Ask one question: are people already searching for what you sell?
If yes, start with Google Ads. Capture the demand that exists before you try to create more. Clinics, contractors, workshops, tuition centres, B2B services and professional firms usually fall here.
If not, or if your product sells on sight, start with Meta. Cafés, restaurants, bakeries, retail, beauty, events and property launches usually fall here.
Once the first channel pays for itself, add the second. Meta builds awareness that shows up as branded Google searches; Google catches the people Meta warmed up. Together they do more than either alone, but only once you can afford both properly.
Budgets In RM: What Is Realistic
There are two numbers: what you pay the platform (ad spend) and what you pay whoever manages it (the fee).
Ad spend. Typical market ranges for small and medium businesses in Malaysia run from roughly RM 1,500 to RM 8,000 a month on Meta. Google varies more, because click prices depend on the industry; a dental implant click costs far more than a café click. Below roughly RM 1,500 to RM 3,000 a month, two things happen: the platform does not get enough data to optimise, and any management fee becomes a disproportionate share of the total.
Management fees. Typical market ranges in Malaysia are a flat RM 1,000 to RM 3,500 a month for a specialist handling a small business account, or 15% to 20% of ad spend (some agencies quote up to 25%), with percentages usually applied once spend reaches a certain level.
Our pricing. For both Google Ads and Meta Ads, we charge RM 1,688 to set up the account, campaigns, tracking and first creative, then 20% of your monthly ad spend as the management fee, with a minimum of RM 1,200 a month. The first month is a commitment, after that it is month to month. Ad spend is paid by you directly to Google or Meta and is never marked up. Extra static creative is RM 150 per piece.
A sensible starting point for most JB businesses is around RM 3,000 a month of ad spend on one channel, plus the management fee. Less than that and you are testing rather than running; more than that should be earned by results.
WhatsApp Click Ads: The JB Default
In Johor Bahru, the enquiry usually ends up on WhatsApp whatever the advert says. So design for it.
On Meta, click-to-WhatsApp ads send the person straight into a chat with your business, with a pre-filled first message you choose. For a café, a bakery or a shop, that is often the only funnel you need: advert, chat, order.
On Google, you can add a message option to ads and send landing-page visitors to a WhatsApp button rather than a form. A short landing page with the offer, three reasons to trust you and one large WhatsApp button regularly beats a long form.
Whichever platform, the rules are the same: reply fast, save a few quick replies for the common questions, and ask for the booking or the order in the chat. Our guide on turning WhatsApp enquiries into customers goes deeper.
Tracking: Set It Up Before You Spend A Ringgit
The most common reason ads “do not work” in JB is that nobody can tell whether they worked. Before any campaign goes live you need:
- Google Analytics 4 on the website, with a goal for each enquiry: form sent, WhatsApp button clicked, call button tapped.
- The Meta Pixel and Conversions API, so Meta learns which people actually enquire.
- Google Ads conversion tracking, so Google bids on people who become enquiries rather than people who merely click.
- A simple way to note which enquiries became customers, even if it is a spreadsheet.
With tracking in place, you can say “we spent RM 3,000 and got 42 WhatsApp conversations and 11 customers” and decide what to do next. Without it, you are guessing.
What The Management Fee Should Cover
If you pay someone to run your ads, you should be getting, at minimum:
- Keyword and audience research for Johor Bahru, including Malay and Chinese search terms and Singapore-based audiences where relevant.
- Campaign structure, ad copy and creative, written for your customers, not copied from a template.
- Landing pages or at least clear advice on where the clicks should land.
- Tracking set up and checked before launch.
- Weekly optimisation: pausing what does not work, moving budget to what does, testing new adverts.
- A monthly report in plain English that says what was spent, what came in and what changes next.
If a fee covers less than that, it is not management; it is just switching the ads on.
What To Do Next
If you want a recommendation for your business, the advertising page explains both channels and what is included. Or send us a message with what you sell, who buys it and roughly what you could spend each month. We will tell you which channel to start with, usually within 12 hours, and give you a fixed price quote.
